How do I teach my dog to like his crate, and not be scared of it?

I just adopted a 1 year and 3 month old border collie/Australian shepherd dog. I think the people who had him before me used the crate as punishment. What is the easiest way to fix this. I tried praising him and giving treats but he just spits the treat back at you.
