Are CD's released with a predefined genre?

The record labels and publishers determine the genre and according to that, they see which audience to target. From the beginning of the creative process, they give guidelines about melody, lyric, chord, and production elements, that will guide artists towards the genre the Label thinks will sell more. Yes, they are THAT controlling - it's millions of money at stakes (and this is why there are a lot more indie artists nowadays).
